Located between two of the largest slums in Mumbai, Nirmik was started in August 2023 by Yalgaar Sanskrutik Manch, a Dalit-Ambedkarite cultural activist group. I have been programming and curating films since September 2023 for Nirmik Cultural center, an artist-run community-focused cultural space that supports grassroots artistic and social engagement. Our community is primarily from the working class who live in Kranti Nagar and Damu Nagar and we have activists and artists who are associated with the progressive movements in Maharashtra and India.
From the beginning, my curation has prioritized filmmakers from underrepresented communities and economically marginalized caste backgrounds. We do not watch for leisure only, we watch to generate consciousness and engage in serious discussion with filmmakers and our community. Occassionaly, curating panel discussions that involved activists and filmmakers.
Since 2025, our screening series has been titled, 'From the Margins'. Through this series we wish to explore what social justice, filmmaking and aesthetics in contemporary film are and how filmmakers are navigating it to challenge the status quo of society. We usually meet on the fourth Sunday of every month.
So far we have shown the following films and filmmakers.
